Humboldt Avenue rebuild replaces watermain and sanitary sewer from 53rd to 57th
What's happening in Brooklyn Center right now
The Humboldt Avenue Improvement Project is rebuilding the corridor from 53rd Avenue North to 57th Avenue North, with construction that started in April 2026 and is scheduled to run through November. The project includes full-depth pavement replacement, partial curb replacement, storm sewer repair, watermain replacement, and partial sanitary sewer replacement. Crews are currently installing new underground utilities along the corridor, and residents should expect day-to-day changes in driveway access as work moves block by block.
What this means for your drains
Watermain and partial sanitary sewer replacement in the same corridor means trench work is happening directly over or beside private lateral connections for months at a time.
- Direct trench work near lateral connections — the partial sanitary sewer replacement between 53rd and 57th means some sections of main are being dug up and reconnected right where private laterals tie in, and that's where offsets and leaks tend to appear afterward
- Mixed-era cast iron laterals — Brooklyn Center's housing stock is a mix of eras, and a large share of homes along this corridor run on cast iron laterals installed decades ago that are now more prone to corrosion and cracking
- Rolling driveway access changes soil around service lines — as crews move block by block and temporarily cut off driveway access, the repeated excavation and backfill near each property's curb line can disturb the soil around service line connections more than once
If you're near Humboldt Ave between 53rd and 57th
With utility installation active now and the project running through November, a documented baseline before winter freeze is worth getting while the work is still visible on your block. We provide the video on a USB stick you keep.
