Homeowner vs. city responsibility

Owner responsible for service pipe up to (not including) the curbstop.

📍 Local construction update

Swedish Immigrant Regional Trail reconditioning + Highway 8 redesign coming

What's happening in Shafer right now

Two projects are on Shafer's radar this summer and looking ahead. The Swedish Immigrant Regional Trail — Segment E (Quandam Lane to Rydeen Ave, a 2.1-mile stretch inside Shafer) is being reconditioned along with its parking lot, with construction running August through September 2026 and the trail closed for 3-4 weeks during the work. MnDOT and Chisago County are also finalizing the Highway 8 redesign that will run through Shafer, with the project addressing high-speed traffic, unsafe passing, driveway/access safety, and the intersection at Redwing Avenue — where the county has approved a new roundabout scheduled for 2029. Design work is happening now.

What this means for your drains

Shafer is small, but small-town infrastructure has its own quirks — and a lot of Shafer homes are on well-and-septic rather than city sewer. Here's what we typically see when nearby trail and highway work is going on:

  • Increased truck vibration on side streets — old cast-iron and clay laterals crack, and cracks let roots in
  • Rural drain tile issues — when heavy equipment reshapes grading nearby, water finds new paths and old drain tile stops working the way it did
  • Septic backup into floor drains — septic problems don't announce themselves until a floor drain in the basement suddenly starts smelling or backing up

We service both city and rural Shafer — cable, hydro-jet, and camera on floor drains, kitchen lines, laundry, and drain tile. If you've got any of these signs, we can be at your door same-day and show you exactly what's inside the line on video you keep.
