Hennepin County well sealing cost-share + point-of-sale septic compliance — the details Edina homeowners actually need
Many Edina homes are on municipal sanitary sewer, but the county also runs important programs for legacy well properties and homes with septic systems — especially relevant when you’re buying, selling, or refinancing.
Hennepin County covers 75% / $2,000 of well sealing costs, requires a 5-year compliance certificate and 3-year inspection report, and maintains 2,200+ mi of county roadway.

West 72nd Street reconstruction replaces sanitary sewer and watermain through Cornelia
What's happening in Edina right now
The West 72nd Street Improvements project began construction the week of July 7, 2026, rebuilding the corridor between France Avenue and Cornelia Drive through the South Cornelia and Lake Edina neighborhoods. Contractor Ryan Contracting is working through three phases — Cornelia Drive to Gloucester Avenue, Gloucester to France, and the France Avenue intersection — replacing the sanitary sewer and watermain, adding spot storm sewer replacement, narrowing the roadway, and adding an 8-foot sidewalk. The work is expected to be substantially complete this fall, with minor touch-up in spring 2027. This is the first segment of the city's broader South Trunk Sanitary Sewer Improvements program, a phased effort running 2026-2030, which closed West 72nd Street from Lynmar Lane to Oaklawn Avenue starting July 8.
What this means for your drains
A full sanitary sewer and watermain replacement on a 1950s-60s corridor touches nearly every lateral connection along the way.
- Direct lateral disturbance at the main — when the city replaces the sanitary sewer main itself, every private lateral tying into it along West 72nd Street gets exposed or reconnected, and that connection point is where offsets and leaks tend to show up later
- Clay pipe age in South Cornelia and Lake Edina — homes in this part of Edina were largely built in the 1950s and 60s on clay tile laterals, which are already prone to root intrusion and joint separation before any construction begins
- Multi-year phased work ahead — because the South Trunk Sanitary Sewer program runs through 2030, homes near this corridor will see repeated rounds of nearby excavation over the next several years, not just this one season
If you're near West 72nd Street or South Cornelia
With the France-to-Cornelia segment active now and more phases planned through 2030, getting a documented baseline this fall — before winter freeze — is worth doing while the work is fresh. We provide the inspection video on a USB stick you keep.
