Ramsey County well sealing cost-share — and the city-level sewer programs Maplewood homeowners can tap
Ramsey County doesn’t run county-wide sanitary sewer utilities directly — that’s done at the city level. But the county does run a well sealing cost-share program that’s relevant to legacy-well properties in Maplewood and other northern Ramsey suburbs.
Ramsey County covers $750 per well and 50% reimbursement for well sealing, maintains a 250 mi county road system, and leaves sewer utilities to city-level departments.

Walter-Beam neighborhood full reconstruction underway — pavement, curb, and utility work in three phases
What's happening in Maplewood right now
Maplewood's biggest 2026 project is the Walter-Beam area street reconstruction, which is moving fast. The first layer of pavement went in on Phase 1 and Phase 2 areas the week of June 29. Utility work started on Phase 3 streets the same week. Concrete curb and sidewalks for Phase 3 are being installed now, and separate work is beginning on Clarence Street south of County Road C. Meanwhile, Ramsey County held an open house on the Rice Street corridor improvement (between Larpenteur Avenue and County Road B), which will be the next major reconstruction. MnDOT is running the Westbound I-94 project through Maplewood and Oakdale this summer.
What this means for your drains
The Walter-Beam project is a utility-first rebuild — that's the kind of work that touches sewer and water service lines from the street side. Here's what typically shows up on homes in a reconstruction like this:
- Utility work in the roadway — when the city rebuilds water main, sanitary sewer main, or storm sewer under the street, every home's service line connection point gets disturbed. Older laterals with hairline cracks often start leaking or root-fouling in the 6–18 months after
- Older Maplewood clay and cast iron — the Walter-Beam neighborhood dates to the 50s and 60s. Original clay sewer laterals and galvanized water service are common, and both are sensitive to soil movement
- Rice Street corridor next — if Rice Street reconstruction advances as planned, homes and businesses between Larpenteur and County Road B will see similar disruption in 2027
If your home is in the Walter-Beam area or off Rice Street
A camera inspection this fall is the right insurance policy. You see the condition of your lateral before winter, and if the utility work causes damage over the next year, you have footage from before. We provide the video on a USB stick you keep.
Call 612-382-7397 or book a camera inspection.
