Homeowner vs. city responsibility

The property owner is generally responsible for the sewer service line from the house to the main. Backups, root intrusions, and lateral failures inside that private line are the homeowner’s responsibility to clear and repair.

If you have a backup and are not sure whether it is on your side or the city's, we can put a camera down and confirm before anyone digs.

📍 Local construction update

Fox Hollow neighborhood gets full street and utility reconstruction, Market Boulevard rebuilt downtown

What's happening in Chanhassen right now

Chanhassen's 2026 City Pavement Rehabilitation Project is running two different jobs at once: the Fox Hollow neighborhood gets a full street reconstruction with complete watermain and storm sewer replacement after years of repeated water main breaks, while Vasserman Ridge gets a lighter mill-and-overlay with spot curb and sidewalk repair (City of Chanhassen). Downtown, the Market Boulevard Improvement Project entered Phase 2 on July 6, closing Market Boulevard from Market Street South to West 79th Street through mid-September for underground utility work near the railroad tracks and construction of a new downtown water reuse pump station (City of Chanhassen). Carver County's $116 million Highway 5 expansion from Highway 41 to Victoria is also active, with Highway 41 and Bavaria Road closed through mid-summer ahead of a full Highway 5 closure planned for 2027 (Carver County).

What this means for your drains

Fox Hollow is getting the most invasive kind of work a neighborhood sees — full sewer and water main replacement — while the rest of Chanhassen deals with downtown and highway construction nearby.

  • Full main replacement in Fox Hollow — the city has flagged this area for repeated watermain breaks, and full reconstruction means every home's lateral gets reconnected to new pipe. Even with careful work, older sections of clay or cast iron lateral just past the property line can shift when the main next to them is dug out and replaced
  • Mixed-era housing stock reacting differently — Chanhassen has newer PVC in its recent developments, but Fox Hollow and other original neighborhoods still run clay or cast iron laterals from before the PVC transition, and those older materials are more prone to cracking from nearby excavation than the newer construction around them
  • Downtown water reuse system construction — the new pump station and reuse piping tied to Market Boulevard Phase 2 changes underground water routing near the civic campus; properties adjacent to that work may see temporary changes in groundwater levels around older foundation drains

If you're in Fox Hollow or near the Market Boulevard construction zone downtown, a fall camera inspection gives you a clear baseline before winter — we hand over the video on a USB stick so you have your own record.
