2026 Street Improvement Project rebuilds sanitary sewer and water main on 2nd Ave SE and Dellwood St
What's happening in Cambridge right now
Cambridge, the Isanti County seat, has its 2026 Street Improvement Project underway across three project areas, with contractor Geislinger & Sons targeting completion by early November. Work includes new sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewer on 2nd Avenue SE, a full watermain replacement heading north on Dellwood Street from 17th Ave SW, and pavement/curb rebuilds on 10th Ave SE, Marigold Dr, Iris Court, and Lincoln Court. Crews began curb removals and temporary water hookups the week of June 22, with new pavement on the Dellwood-area streets expected in early July (City of Cambridge 2026 Street Improvement Update). Just north of town, MnDOT's $13 million Hwy 65 resurfacing between Cambridge and Braham started after the Fourth of July (KBEK).
What this means for your drains
Cambridge mixes older platted lots near downtown with newer subdivisions, and a lot of the older sanitary sewer being replaced on 2nd Avenue SE dates back decades. Active trench work close to homes tends to surface these patterns:
- Lateral disturbance on 2nd Ave SE — when the city replaces the sanitary main in the street, the homeowner-owned lateral connecting to it is not automatically replaced, and it's usually the oldest, weakest link
- New sags along Dellwood St — fresh watermain trenching from 17th Ave SW north disturbs the soil bed under nearby sewer laterals, and settling over the next year can create a low spot where debris collects
- Detour-route traffic stress — homes along the Hwy 65 detour corridor through town see months of heavy truck traffic, and the vibration can work loose old pipe joints that were already marginal
If you're on 2nd Ave SE, Dellwood St, or near the Hwy 65 detour
If your home sits in one of this year's three project areas or along the Hwy 65 detour route, fall is a smart time to get a camera down your line before winter — we send you home with the video on a USB stick.
